About one billion people experience some form of disability or in other words, about 15% of the world’s population has disability. It is much more prevalent in developing countries. Persons with disabilities are more vulnerable to face adverse socio-economic outcomes, such as, unemployment, lack of access to financial services and above all they are more prone to poverty.People with disabilities continue to face high levels of doubt and cynicism when it comes to borrowing for self-reliant and entrepreneurial work. Especially, when that particular person belongs to a family below poverty line. Annapurna is one of the few MFIs, who has helped large numbers of clients by making them self-reliant and providing them much needed financial support by providing them access to financial services. The company conducts a variety of sensitization sessions on a regular basis for its staff. Not only this, but it also has in its mandate to recruit PWDs in its workplace to provide them an equal opportunity and have the place in accordance with being more sensitive towards PWDs. Annapurna has taken several initiatives like the followings to support these sections of the society to lead a respectable life:

  • Training & Capacity Building of Staffs: Training on PWD sensitization and basic sign language for staff is organized on a regular basis. This is done to make the staff at Annapurna sensitive about the other PWD staffs working with them, or at the branch level, so that they might be more sensitive towards the PWD clients in a group.
  • MIS & Documentation Process: The loan application form has been updated to incorporate the questions that can help identify the clients with disabilities in the group. Data related to PwD clients is therefore maintained and gives more reliable information on quantitative as well as the types of disability prevalent amongst our clients. This has helped in designing alternatives for cash book, loan application form, money receipt, SHG loan documentation, registration form, etc. available in Braille.
  • Incentivising Groups to include PwD: Group(s) having member(s) with disability who have applied for a loan from the company gets subsidized interest rate. They are provided with a subsidy of 1% on the existing interest rate.
  • Training Material: The company has developed an audio visual training material on sign language to communicate better with the clients or employees with disability. These tutorials are not only for disabled clients, but also for others. The training material is easily available at different branches of the company.

The Company’s work in this segment has been recognised and it has won award for Working Group for Disability Inclusive Microfinance at the 5th NCPEDP- Mphasis Universal Design AWARDS 2014 under Category C:Companies and Organizations.
